In fact, it took him quite a while to make a living of his passion, and during that time, he could barely make enough money. His father had a regular job as a real estate agent, but his mother was a piano teacher, so they were relatively stable financially and could help him out. He lived with them until he was 29.

Ray has been married to his wife Anna Scarpulla since 1987, and they met when he wasn't even close to being famous. Ray still hadn't gotten his big break in the comedy world, and he was working odd jobs to get by why he decided what he wanted to do about his art. It was while working as a teller in a bank that he met Anna. The two of them immediately hit it off, and Anna thought it was great how he managed to make a boring job more fun. The moment Ray remembers knowing she was the one was when she was pregnant for the second time. They already had a daughter, Alexandra, and Ray wanted a boy at that time.

"Anna called me after a sonogram," he shared, "and said, 'Well, we're having twins.' I was like, 'Come on!' She said, 'Yes. Twin girls.' I tried to sound happy, going, 'Oh. Good. Good.' Finally, she told me, 'They're boys, you jerk!' That's when I knew I loved her."

Ray and Anna have been married for 34 years, and together for even longer. As much as they love and respect each other, being with the same person for so long can be challenging. In the end, however, love is stronger and they make it work. This is, according to Ray, the secret behind their success.

"One of the secrets is that there's a lot of acceptance," he explained. "Anna would be just as happy with me if I were a plumber. As a matter of fact, when she married me, I was working at a bank and living at home."

6 He Didn't Get Along With His Dad For A Long Time

Family relationships are always complicated. As much as people might love each other, sometimes they just don't get along or they have trouble sharing it. "Our relationship was actually really good at the end. But growing up … his father left him when he was two or three … So he grew up – you know, it wasn't the best of situations for him emotionally and he was very undemonstrative – that's just the way he was," Ray said.

"I started doing standup and everything and he got a big kick out of it," Ray shared. "There's this bond we had through, just through comedy … I would kind of make him laugh and he would always make me laugh. And so we did connect. As an adult, I had this connection with him that I never thought I would have as a kid."

While the lockdowns from 2020 were hard for everyone, Ray found a silver lining in spending his quarantine with his family. He lives with his wife and his younger son, but given the situation of last year, his three other adult children decided to join them.

They all live on their own but wanted to be near the family, so they spent as much time as they could at their parents' house. Ray had no complaints about it, and he was happy to see them often. It surely made his time at home more bearable.

When Everybody Loves Raymond ended, he found himself without the show for the first time in almost a decade, and he realized he had no idea how life was going to be in the next stage of his life, which was middle age. He talked to some friends who were experiencing the same issues and finally decided to write his thoughts and feelings down. From that peculiar, very personal feeling, Men of a Certain Age was born.

It took time for Ray Romano's career to take off, but when it did, it was in the strangest of ways. He was a guest on David Letterman's show, and he apparently did a great job, because days later the production called to offer him the possibility of doingEverybody Loves Raymond.

"I remember my wife saying, 'Rob Burnett's on the phone.' I was in the backyard. I don't know what I was doing. I was hosing off the kids. And I picked the phone up. I was kind of surprised. And he said, 'Listen, Dave liked what he saw. I just want to tell you that we're interested. So let's see what happens,'" Ray shared the story.

1 His Wife's Battle With Cancer

In 2010, Ray and his wife Anna had to go through one of the most difficult moments of their lives. Anna was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, and their lives turned upside down. Ray's wife was always a very active and generous woman, so having to slow down and prioritize herself, especially in a house full of teenagers, was a challenge. Not to mention the obvious stress of not having what is going to happen to your health. It wasn't easy, but with her husband's unconditional support and great doctors, Anna pulled through. After that, she and Ray decided they wanted to share the experience to raise awareness, and support as many charities fighting against cancer as they could.
